Salesman's Sample Atlas
Balch Brothers
1891
$185.
Salesman's sample atlases are all rare and often contain very rare or even unique maps. This one does not contain any rare maps. The maps appear to be from a jobber such as Lakeside Press, which provided maps to many atlas makers of the day. The maps appear to be the same as Cram's maps of the era. The inside front cover has samples of the two different binding colors that were available. There are about 80 pages of sample maps and illustrations forming an incomplete atlas. There is a hand drawn table on the last page listing the orders that the salesman received. He appears to have been a poor salesman as there are only two names listed. The Balch Bros. Atlas is an obscure piece, and this sample atlas may be one of a kind.
